Description

A 1778 oil-painting by John Singleton Copley, “Watson and the Shark” depicts the rescue of Brook Watson from a shark attack in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, in 1749. Watson, then a 14 year old boy, lost his leg in the attack before being rescued on the third attempt (in the painting, his right leg can be seen as having been ripped off below the knee).Watson and Copley became friends after the latter moved to Londin in 1774, and shortly after Watson commissioned Copley for the painting depicting the event. It marks Copley’s first foray into paintings of historical scenes. American-born John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) began painting at a very young age and eventually with such distinctive skill in portraiture that he has been compared favorably with Titian. The majority of his portraits were of North American colonists (he was raised in Boston by his mother and step-father, who was a skilled artist himself and most likely from where Copley learned the foundation of his considerable skill), though he would often paint them with artifacts significant to the subject’s life. A relatively early painting of his half-brother, “The Boy with the Squirrel,” was very well received in London and eventually had him voted in as a Fellow of the Society of Artists of Great Britain, in 1766.Copley was completely disinterested in party and church politics, thinking them as “being neighther pleasing to an artist or advantageous to the Art itself.” However, all the relatives of his wife (married 1769), Susanna Farnham Clarke, were notably Loyalists in the times leading up to the American Revolution, and her father Richard Clarke was the merchant to whom the tea shipment of the famous Boston Tea Party was consigned. Growing tensions with pro-Revolution mobs made the painter fear for his life and the lives of his wife and children, and so eventually he set out to relocate in Britain. Unfortunately, the beginning of his work in England marked also the beginning of a decrease in quality in
